RNG is created from the methane produced by organic materials in landfills, wastewater treatment facilities, and farms across North America. Now, it’s also being produced here in Vermont, on the Goodrich Farm in Addison County. The market for RNG is supported through the sale of the renewable attributes of the methane produced by an RNG project. VGS acquires RNG and offers it to VGS customers.

VGS offers customers two options for purchasing renewable attributes of RNG. Locally Sourced RNG specifically supports local supplies of RNG by acquiring the renewable attributes from Vermont projects, like the Goodrich Farm in Addison County. Blended RNG supports supply from all of VGS’s RNG sources at a lower price per 100 cubic feet (CCF). RNG renewable attributes are sold to customers through VGS’s RNG tariffs. The RNG Adder Tariff allows customers to purchase RNG attributes as a percentage of their current usage, while the S-RNG Adder Tariff allows customers to purchase RNG attributes on a per CCF basis. Current pricing for Blended RNG and Locally Sourced RNG is provided below:

RNG OptionPrice per 100 cubic feet (CCF)
Blended RNG$1.2792
Locally Sourced RNG$1.5953

RNG is mixed with VGS’s overall natural gas supply, so VGS customers do not need to install special equipment to participate in our RNG program. You can use one of our RNG Adder Calculators linked below to see options that fit with your budget:

VGS Renewable Natural Gas program is an innovative offering that will allow VGS customers to purchase the renewable attributes of renewable natural gas (RNG) production. These renewable attributes correspond with the production of RNG by anaerobic digestion of organic matter at landfills, waste treatment plants, industrial sites, and farm digesters that has been injected into the natural gas pipeline system.

Customers can participate in the program by signing up to purchase renewable attributes of RNG for a percentage of their natural gas usage (ex. 10%, 25%, 50% or 100%) or a specific quantity of their natural gas usage (number of ccf), choosing either Blended RNG or Locally Sourced RNG. Participating customers will be charged an “RNG Adder” corresponding to the chosen percentage or quantity and Blended or Locally Sourced option on their monthly bills.

Use our interactive VGS Renewable Natural Gas Calculators to determine what level works best for your budget and efficiency goals and whether Blended RNG or Locally Sourced RNG is right for you.

That will depend on whether you choose Blended RNG or Locally Sourced RNG. Currently, the Blended RNG Adder is $1.2792 per CCF and the Locally Sourced RNG Adder is $1.5953 per CCF for bills rendered on or after February 1, 2024, but these prices will change each quarter with our approved rate changes. Use our interactive VGS Renewable Natural Gas Calculators to view our rates and determine what level works best for your budget and energy goals.

VGS Renewable Natural Gas current supply is sourced from Goodrich Farm in Salisbury, Vermont, a landfill in Quebec, and from a wastewater treatment plant in Iowa. We are also working to bring on additional supply sources from farm digesters and other sources.

An average customer household enrolling in the VGS Renewable Natural Gas program at the 100% level will reduce the corresponding carbon footprint associated with the customer’s direct use of natural gas.  For a typical VGS residential customer using 900 ccf of conventional natural gas each year this equates to up to 4.9 metric tons of avoided carbon dioxide emission each year.

Customers who participate in the VGS Renewable Natural Gas program can choose to modify or suspend their monthly adder purchase at any time by filling out this form.

Product Content Label

By participating in the VGS Renewable Natural Gas program you are purchasing the renewable attributes associated with the production of renewable natural gas (“RNG”), which may also be referred to as biogas or bio-methane. A unit of VGS Renewable Natural Gas, measured in hundred cubic feet (CCF) represents the environmental attribute of 1 CCF of biogas.  VGS reserves the right to purchase carbon offsets if RNG supply is not available, VGS will notify customers if this occurs.

Program Guidelines

RNG purchased by VGS will be from the anaerobic digestion of organic matter at landfills, waste treatment plants, industrial sites and farm digesters.  VGS will purchase the renewable attributes associated with the RNG.

VGS will retire the corresponding amount of RNG environmental attribute inventory equal to the amount of RNG purchased by the customer.  Upon request, VGS will provide documentation to the customer.

VGS Renewable Natural Gas Adder will appear on customers’ monthly bill as an additional line item, all other bill components will continue to apply.

Customers participating in the VGS Renewable Natural Gas program are subject to  VGS’ Terms and Conditions outlined in VGS’ tariffs and Vermont Public Utility Commission (“PUC”) rules.

VGS tariffs can be found at https://www.vermontgas.com/account/rates/

VGS Renewable Natural Gas customers will be notified of RNG Adder rate changes in advance the effective date of the change unless otherwise ordered by the PUC.  The RNG Adder will change whenever the PUC authorizes a change in the Natural Gas Charge portion of the tariff.  Currently this occurs quarterly.

The RNG Adder will apply, at the percentage selected by the customer, to the usage shown on the monthly bill, regardless of enrollment or termination date.  The RNG Adder will not be pro-rated for partial-month usage.

Customers served under a VGS tariff for firm service can subscribe to the RNG Program with no term commitment and can cancel or modify with three days’ notice.  The termination or modification will be effective with the next regularly scheduled bill.
