Vermont Gas, Intervale Center Partner in Annual Joint Tree Planting Campaign
Employees plant almost 800 trees in the last three years to shore up riverbank and protect habitat.
South Burlington, Vt. – Vermont Gas has once again joined forces with the Intervale Center and the Winooski Valley Parks District to plant over 375 trees at the Ethan Allen Homestead in Burlington. This planting project is part of the Company’s commitment to conservation and education. Tree plantings along stream embankments prevent erosion and help protect fish habitat. About 20 Vermont Gas employees took part in this morning’s planting.
“Hands-on projects like this tree planting partnership with the Intervale Center furthers our clean energy mission and helps immediately improve water quality and sequester carbon to mitigate climate change,” said Tiana Smith, Talent and Culture Lead at VGS. “From converting to cleaner natural gas, participating in our award-winning efficiency programs and signing up for our first-in-the-nation renewable natural gas program, VGS is offering simple solutions to Vermont families and businesses to reduce their carbon footprint today.”
This is the third year Vermont Gas has teamed with Intervale Center to plant trees near Vermont rivers and lakes. Unlike so many places in the country and across the globe, in Vermont, we absorb more carbon than we emit. Trees are an important part of our efforts to address climate change here in Vermont. Since 1990, land use, land-use change, and forestry activities have resulted in more removal of CO2 from the atmosphere than emissions in our state.
“The team from Vermont Gas brings an incredible amount of enthusiasm and hard work to help us plant hundreds of trees in Chittenden County,” said Travis Marcotte, Executive Director at the Intervale Center. “Collaboration with Vermont’s business community is an important part of our work strengthening community food systems and protecting Vermont’s land and water resources.”
